Taking Effective Photos After a Motor Vehicle Accident

You’re never really prepared for an automobile crash. A severe wreck can dramatically impact your life, especially if you sustain personal injuries and vehicle or property damage. You may require intensive and prolonged medical treatment; your vehicle may need significant repairs or even replacement; you may need time off from work; and, you may be unable to engage in important life activities like caring for children and loved ones.

In the immediate moments and days after a wreck, your first priority should be taking care of your health. But if you are able, you’ll want to use a camera to document things like the vehicles involved in the wreck, the crash scene, and your personal injuries as soon as possible, while the evidence is still fresh. If you are unable to take these photos yourself, you can ask a friend or family member to take these pictures for you.

It may be helpful to capture the following types of images:

• Vehicle damage. This will help attorneys and investigators get a better idea of how the crash happened and how and the severity of the impact. Take pictures of the vehicles involved in the wreck from close up, from farther away, and from different angles to document all of the damage and provide a full perspective.
• Road conditions. This can include things like obstructions in the road, uneven road surfaces, improperly functioning traffic lights, damaged or obscured road signs, and many other kinds of conditions.
• Weather conditions. If weather like rain, snow, ice, or fog contributed to the wreck, then you may consider documenting these conditions. This could be very important if the person that hit you was traveling too fast for existing conditions.
• Photographic evidence of the injuries that you and your passengers suffered can strengthen the evidence provided by medical records.
• Crash scene. Photos from various angles of the crash scene can help your attorneys, experts, and ultimately a jury to have a better understanding of what happened during the wreck and where the events took place. Try to include some wide-angle shots that take in as much of the crash scene as possible. Also take pictures of things like the location of skid marks, broken glass, or other vehicle debris that may be scattered around the scene.
