Butler Prather LLP Supports UGA Legal Clinic for Veterans
Uplifting the University of Georgia School of Law Veterans Legal Clinic
At Butler Prather LLP, we feel a tremendous debt of gratitude for our veterans. In this spirit, founding partner James E. “Jim” Butler is committed to helping veterans transition into civilian life by supporting the Veterans Legal Clinic at the University of Georgia School of Law. The clinic offers free legal services for Georgia veterans.
The Veterans Legal Clinic at UGA School of Law
The Veterans Legal Clinic is funded by a lead gift from Jim Butler. Jim made this commitment to support veterans in honor of his late father, Lt. Cmdr. James E. Butler Sr., who was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy. The clinic provides free legal aid for veterans from across Georgia. Students at UGA School of Law can also earn course credits by assisting veterans through the clinic.
The Veterans Legal Clinic specializes in helping students process claims that have been deferred or denied by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The clinic maintains an ongoing caseload of around 25 veterans. It also makes referrals to attorneys who provide veterans with legal assistance.
Law students enrolled in the Veterans Legal Clinic provide legal advice, counseling, and advocacy for veterans who might not otherwise be able to access these services. In addition to helping veterans in need, the Veterans Legal Clinic offers invaluable benefits for law students, including:
- Learning about veterans’ needs and their life experiences
- Supporting veterans with mental or physical disabilities
- Receiving legal experience in administrative law
- Attending weekly legal seminars
- Developing an ethic of public service
- Working with government agencies and professionals, including social workers and psychologists
